 The Tango Guy (Part 2)

...Dance Class Stories, Part 2

Last week: my wife dragged me to dance lessons, sprained my ankle sidelined me, and a man with a magnificent Kaiser mustache started leading my wife across the dance floor a little too gracefully. I was, for the record, not okay.

The real damage came after class.

Mr. Kaiser Mustache walked over to the water cooler, cracked open two bottles without asking, handed one to my wife, wiped the sweat from his forehead with infuriating confidence, and smiled.

It was the smile.

Not arrogant.

Not flirtatious.

Just... effortlessly comfortable.

The kind of confidence you can't buy once your knees start making sounds every time you stand up.

I hated how much I respected it.

Man to man...

the guy had presence.

If only I were ten years younger.

Then again...

I'd still have been twenty years older than him.

Reality can be unnecessarily specific.

The drive home was worse.

She hummed.

Actually hummed.

Nobody hums after grocery shopping.

Nobody hums after paying taxes.

People hum because something delightful happened.

"My neck feels amazing," she said.

"I didn't realize how much tension I had."

A pause.

"He's an incredible lead."

Then she made three happy little sounds that cannot legally be represented in the English language.

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

My wife is frighteningly intelligent.

The kind of intelligent that quietly ruins standardized testing curves for everyone else.

Her IQ is somewhere north of mine by enough points that we've agreed never to discuss the exact number in public.

When our son was born, I had only one prayer.

Please...

let him inherit her brain.

Everything she usually does is carefully thought through.

Everything except, apparently,

complimenting another man while sitting in the passenger seat beside her husband.

That night I reached an unavoidable conclusion.

Next week...

we were switching dances.

Foxtrot.

Swing.

Square dancing.

Competitive napping.

Anything except tango.

By then my ankle would be healed.

I still had moves.

They weren't medically recommended anymore...

but they existed.

People misunderstand long marriages.

Trust has never been the difficult part.

I trust my wife with everything.

Our savings.

Important documents.

Passwords.

Even the offshore account I mistakenly believed she'd never discover.

She found it before I remembered where I'd hidden it.

Trusting your spouse...

and trusting every random variable the universe introduces...

are not the same thing.

Those are entirely different investments.

So I decided to remain...

vigilant.

Not controlling.

Protective.

In my head I was Kevin Costner.

Somewhere Whitney Houston was already singing.

I was prepared.

Then the following Thursday arrived.

And God, in His infinite sense of humor,

sent me a lesson in humility.

Waiting beside the dance floor...

was an elderly gentleman.

Silver hair.

Impeccable posture.

Suspenders.

Polished shoes.

The instructor greeted him like visiting royalty.

People actually applauded.

Someone whispered,

"He's been teaching swing for over forty years."

Wonderful.

Exactly what every insecure husband hopes to hear.

The old gentleman bowed politely to my wife.

Not dramatically.

Not flirtatiously.

Just...

perfectly.

Then they danced.

I'd spent an entire week worrying about youth.

Turns out experience is much, much scarier.

That old man floated.

He didn't chase the music.

The music chased him.

Every woman in the room suddenly stood a little taller dancing with him.

Even I wanted him to teach me.

Which was confusing.

Weeks later I finally learned something about Mr. Kaiser Mustache.

He had six children.

Worked multiple jobs.

Rarely slept.

At the time, he was quietly living with the uncertainty of his immigration status, trying to keep his family together while never letting anyone see the weight he carried.

And every Thursday...

he still showed up smiling.

Eventually he received his permanent residency.

I was genuinely happy for him.

This is also a good moment to confess...

during my less enlightened phase,

I'd briefly considered reporting him to immigration.

Purely out of jealousy.

Thankfully laziness defeated prejudice before paperwork ever had the chance.

Sometimes procrastination deserves more credit than morality.

It's unsettling how quickly the human brain writes fiction.

One confident smile...

and I'd cast him as the villain.

One open collar...

and I'd invented an entire personality.

Meanwhile the real story was happening somewhere I never bothered to look.

He wasn't trying to steal anyone's wife.

He was trying to build a life.

The only thing I truly understood about him...

was how completely I'd misunderstood him.

I've started to think prejudice isn't really seeing someone else.

It's seeing your own fears...

wearing someone else's face.

Maybe that's what getting older is supposed to teach us.

Not that our instincts become better—

but that they deserve a second opinion.

Now, whenever I catch myself deciding who someone is before they've spoken...

I remember the man with the Kaiser mustache.

The swing legend.

My wonderfully patient wife.

And the ridiculous husband sitting on a folding chair,

guarding a purse,

clutching a winter coat,

convinced he was starring in The Bodyguard...

After the tango lessons,

I try not to judge people too quickly.

We like to believe we see people for who they are.

But more often than not,

we're only seeing the person we've already created in our own minds.

So whenever I meet someone for the first time,

I pause.

And quietly ask myself,

What if I'm wrong again?
